Field Note – Winter 2021

That’s right, Kathy Dean discovered this bear trail on January 7 in Western MA. It’s one of several discovered by trackers this season, part of a pattern of winter bear activity.

Black bears are not true hibernators but rather enter periods of torpor (reduced activity) due to very cold weather and poor food supply. So what’s keeping them active in the early days of 2020? A combination of mild temperatures and abundant, accessible acorns in parts of their northeastern range.

Are the bears still active in your neck of the woods?
